Twice the Twang
03:37
|
|||
Well it started on a front porch day,
I was picking away my troubles, wishing away the rain
And when it came upon, the telephone rang
It sounds like three time the money, two time the twang.
Come on burn, sunshine burn
I'm working for what I need the most
Cause when the time is right and the moon is high
I'll have a pretty girl by my side
It's three time the money, two time the twang.
So I packed my shirts and I tuned my guitar
I hit the road running drinking beer from a jar
And when it came upon, the Whiskey Jack sang
Sounds like three for the money, two for the twang
Come on burn sunshine burn
I'm working for what I need the most
Cause when the time is right and the moon is high
I'll have a pretty girl by my side
It's three for the money, two for the twang
Oh the traveling life ain't good you see
It's just me in the shadows of what I used to be
And though the sun burns hot I stay for this thing
We're here for the money, here for the twang
Come on burn sunshine burn
I'm working for what I need the most
Cause when the time is right and the moon is high
I'll have a pretty girl by my side
We're here for the money, here for the twang

Whar Whoop

It's rendezvous and we're getting mighty mean
We're sitting by the fire hoping for Spring.
In the back of his mind he was seeing old things
Took to his feet, poor devil inside
They pulled up short and the riders swung off
WIth a streak in the eye, he's looking sorta dark
"Both of you Blackfoot get out of my way"
And one of them devils sent a bullet our way
And all of the sudden looking streak in the eye
Another popped up with 'em eight on his side
We seen him give just a little before
Now it's ten to one and we're running once more
Back at our horses heard my Summer shout out
Way off in the distance, I hope they're worn out
Medicine came and the bubbles brought all
Back at the bank they let the trap fall
With a puff of smoke, yeah, the Devil came in
Bullets whistling and they loaded again
The rifle spit out and he ran at the bangs
He pointed and fired, I could hear 'em scream
The last one fell while running up stream
It was the touch of the swivel and the rise of the grain
With the last of his breaths, sweet mother of god
He put an arrow in me and a crack in my jaw

Devil Can't Hang
04:05
|
|||
I'm kicking stones on the side of the road
Hoping for my baby's smile to welcome me back home
Cause I'm sick, yeah I'm sick to the bone
I ain't gonna tell her what I done
I just walk this lonely road
And I know I just got to survive
To live, to love, to fear, to fight, no ain't going down tonight
Cause I took, I took that man's life
Gotta hit the road, gotta run, gotta go
Before the Furies steal the night
It's just me and the tires, the road and a gun
I'll go as fast as this truck can run
I see your ghost in the rising sun and I say...
Devil can't hang to save my life
And I don't have the strength to hold him back
No the Devil can't stay inside my life
So I just got to run away
Run away
It's breaking my heart so I just got to run away
I ain't got no heart so I just got to run away
Since I been gone I found myself in the sky
Oh preach, Preachers preach, you're talking right at me
And I live to forget what I done
But I can't keep it up, gotta run while I'm young
Till the law gives me mine
It's just me and the tires, the road and a gun
I won't give up my ghost till the West is won
Oh, Mama don't look at what I've become
And I say...
Devil can't hang to save my life
And I don't have the strength to hold him back
No the Devil can't stay inside my life
So I just got to run away
Run away
It's breaking my heart so I just got to run away
I ain't got no heart so I just got to run away

The Big Sky
04:26
|
|||
I still don't know how the sun shines
On the country roads the dust flies
As I wander
I walk until I'm weak in the knees
I ain't seen her face since there was leaves in the trees
Oh, I wander
Oh, I still wander
Living for the big sky
Living for that wide open life
Living for the look in your eyes
Living for the big sky
As time rolls slowly along
I just want to write you a sweet banjo song
Before my time's up
But songs grow old and my voice will fade
And from you, my love, I can't stay away
Until my time's up

One by One
04:22
|
|||
Take these thousand hills and walk 'em one by one
One by one
Cause I never been so gone before
So far gone, one by one
Shaky days
Some hard ways
Tougher days
Shaky days
Some hard ways
Take these shackles off and drop 'em one by one
One by one
Cause I never heard that sound before of my freedom hit the floor
One by one
Take these words from me and hear 'em one by one
One by one
Cause I never told a thousand tales but I'll tell 'em one by one
One by one

The Bones of Edgar Wylie
06:21
|
|||
They'll bury you in a place that's hard to find
No crosses mark the grave, just bullet holes in mine
The thought of brighter days are gone with dying times
The earth and stone contain my bones and here is where I lie
Oh, that earth and stone
It's isolation and skipping trains that brought me to this place
This ain't no North Dakota country side, it's rocks and trees and rain
I tell you about a hundred years ago I was cutting and running shine
There's no judge, no jury, no trial or god that can take away what I find
Oh, that earth and stone
So long child, save your sorrow
For a good man whose name you'd like to borrow
This ain't no good reason for wasting happy eyes
Just find that earth and stone if you need a place to hide
Oh, that earth and stone
I'm asking you to bury me with my rifle by my side
Pay away my debts, wipe my name from this island
I'll fake my way up, if the gates are open wide
There's no earth or stone to hold my sins I lived in this life
Oh, that earth and stone

One More Day
06:11
|
|||
I fought my way back from the Georgia Strait
Cause I've been where horizon meets the day
I found this place where the Devil has a face
And no whiskey's gonna wipe away my dreams
So come on and lay with me
While I'm here in the empty
And I sing "Come on and save me from this song with no ending"
Out of fire and into water
Don't you cry o'er my hunger
Cause you know I'll lie with you one more day
For half my life and most of yours too
I've been sailing this broke down ship
From here to where I can't have you
It's not killing me, only me of a lesser degree
Would forsake what they left back in the country
If only waves could carry thoughts and praise
They'd roll across the ocean till they splash into your lonely face
But don't stare too long at the blue so tall and strong
Just know I'll be coming before too long

Chicken Feet
03:33
|
|||
I swam through muddy waters
Just to get a look at that old man's daughter
As she danced across the garden
Her feet moved like a steaming freight liner
Come on, on down to Dixie
We've been going since we tore down the city
Come on now little lady
My banjo's running my feet are getting ready
There's no time to waste while we're young and
There's no time to waste since that day
Banjo broke my toe but I don't need it anymore
It's just slowing me down from moving my own way
So I go out on the street and I move my chicken feet
Dancing with my girl till morning meet
On down the Mississippi
We're cleaning up but we're just gonna get dirty
Ain't no street lights on the highway
But she'll light up the night make daytime come early
Ten fingers, nine toes
That's just the way it goes
Won't slow me down from moving my own way
So I go out on the street and I move my chicken feet
Dancing with my girl till morning meet

Broken Boats
03:57
|
|||
It's on cedar planks and old oak risers
Looming large on a sea that rises
On a tide to wash away the years
BROKEN BOATS and the wind is screaming
Missing men are bruised and bleeding
Buying time for another year
Time goes slow, there's no where left to go
The wind will carry me back home
The jungle rots and the bugs start teasing
Hanging vines should be hung for treason
The air's so hot the wind won't blow
Green eyes and teeth are staring
They're open wide and the claws start tearing
Buying time for another year
And I've got a strong suspicion that the world is on a mission
To tell me that I'm done for through and through
Good times they went so far, those bad ones just seemed to last
Much longer than I'd want them too
So I'll look out on the horizon
Beacon calls and it's time for leaving
Whistle's blowing I'd better be on my way
It's on cedar planks and old oak risers
Looming large on a sea that rises
On a tide to wash away the years
There I go, I ain't got nothing left to show
The wind is gonna carry me back home
